Storage in a Small Kitchen

The number one problem people have in their kitchen is space. Many frustrated cooks have nearly pulled their hair out when they run out of counter space while cooking a big meal, and everybody knows the feeling of trying to find a place for a new pot or pan. That's why the first thing you should think about when designing a kitchen for a small space is storage and counter space.

Make sure you have enough counter space in your small kitchen design. Counters are a super important kitchen feature, and you can never have enough. You'll use your counters for storing food and appliances and also for space to use while cooking. If you have a bar or otherwise plan to eat on your counters, you'll need even more space. Again, to get enough counter space you'll probably have to get creative.

One great way to maximize your counter space is to install a small kitchen island in your kitchen. This will add some extra counter space as well as storage. It will also take up space in the middle of your kitchen, though, so consider whether you have enough space to being with.

You also need to make sure you have a solid kitchen cabinet design so that you have enough space to store everything you need in the kitchen. In a smaller kitchen, you might need to install taller cabinets than you otherwise would to get extra space. You'll need to use a stepping stool, but the extra space will be worth it. You can store mixers, bowls, and other less frequently used utensils up high while keeping the lower shelves free for dishes, cups, and commonly used utensils. While you're at it, make sure that you have plenty of cabinets below your countertop. These are also great places to store cookware or even food.
